Volkswagen has announced a third addition to its V6 Amarok ute line-up, with the Sportline set to join the Highline and Ultimate next week.

The Sportline will be the new entry-level to V6 Amarok ownership with a RRP of $55,490 before on-road costs. That pricing drops the Amarok Sportline in below the $57,390 HiLux SR5 (auto) and $55,690 Ranger XLT (auto), a clear signal that Volkswagen is getting serious about the 4X4 ute segment.

The Amarok Sportline is powered by the same V6 turbo-diesel found in the Highline and Ultimate, which means there’s 165kW and 550Nm on tap and up-to 180kW on overboost, which compares favourably with the HiLux’s 130kW/450Nm and the Ranger’s 147kW/470Nm.

Interestingly, Volkswagen has elected to drop the AdBlue system from all Amarok models being sold into Australia (including the V6) due they claim, to “global demand”. The Amarok continues to meet its Euro5 emissions requirements and one can only assume that AdBlue will be reintroduced to the range when Euro6 comes into effect from mid 2018.

The gearbox is an eight-speed automatic and like the Highline and Ultimate it pushes those 550 newton-metres through Volkswagen’s 4-Motion all-wheel-drive system. For now, there is no low-range transfer case option but this may change when a six-speed manual Sportline V6 goes on sale in Australia next year.

Volkswagen claims the V6 Amaroks are capable of reaching 100km/h from a standing start in 7.9 seconds, which is quick for a turbo-diesel, if somewhat irrelevant for a high-riding 4X4 ute.

Volkswagen as always, is quick to point out that the Amarok is the only dual-cab ute that fits a full-size pallet between the wheel arches, but the up-coming Mercedes-Benz X-Class will join this elite if somewhat irrelevant club when it lobs in Australia next year. Have you ever seen a $50,000+ ute with a pallet in the tub?

Firing a shot across the bow of the X-Class was all part of this announcement, with Carlos Santos, the Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles saying, “Amarok V6’s technology derives wholly from within the Volkswagen Group. We have not had to look to Japan for a donor vehicle”.

The Amarok Sportline V6 includes the following:

3.0l V6 turbo diesel
165kw of power
180kw with overboost
550Nm of torque
Permanent 4×4
8-speed automatic
Combined fuel consumption, 9.0L / 100km
4-wheel disc brakes
18″ ‘Manaus’ alloy wheels
Front and rear parking sensors
Rear-view camera
Dual-zone climate control air conditioning
6.33–inch composition media with App-connect
Dual Apple Carplay
4x12v USB sockets
